Payments in 2020
Published on:
Payments are evolving rapidly, driven by new technical possibilities as well as legislation and regulations such as the revised Payment Services Directive (PSD2), the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and anti-money laundering legislation.

Combined with PSD2, Instant Payments make it possible to develop new mobile payment methods that compete with established methods such as card payments.
Good solutions for online identification and authentication are urgently needed to comply with new security and privacy requirements.
Below is a selection of the many payments topics on which the Dutch Payments Association will focus in 2020:
- Accessibility and reachability: the rapid digitalisation of payments may appear daunting to some people, but it can also offer considerable security and convenience.
- Project coordination for the SCA Migration Project, supporting the smooth introduction of two-step verification for online card payments while minimising any loss of convenience.
- Security: working together to keep payments safe and secure, while providing information about phishing and safe online banking.
- Efficiency: making it even easier to switch banks by further digitalising the Dutch Switching Service and providing additional information for credit transfers to an old account, as well as explaining new ways of paying at the point of sale (in Dutch) , for example using wearables and mobile phones.
- Online identity: needed, among other things, for robust Know Your Customer (KYC) processes, for example through two-step verification using iDIN , the shared identification and login service offered by Dutch banks.
- Availability and reliability: both for established payment methods such as payment cards and iDEAL and for new infrastructure supporting services such as Instant Payments.
