Standards form the basis for uniform, reliable, and secure payments. Thanks to standardised agreements, banks, businesses, and consumers worldwide can send and receive payments without misunderstandings or errors.

Recent developments in society

  • The migration to the ISO 20022 messaging standard for European and international payments was completed in 2025.
  • Further digitization, instant payments, and verification of payee require new standards that support faster and richer data traffic.
  • Cybersecurity and compliance (e.g., with PSD2 and anti-money laundering rules) increase the need for a common, uniform, and secure messaging standard.

Role of the Dutch Payments Association

  • The Dutch Payments Association represents its members in international forums such as ISO and the European Payments Council (EPC).
  • We coordinate between banks, software suppliers, and market parties in the Netherlands to ensure a uniform interpretation of international standards.
  • In consultation with members and stakeholders, we develop and manage collective implementation agreements, such as implementation guidelines and conversion tables.
  • We provide bank-specific information and reason codes to companies and software suppliers to ensure the correct and unambiguous processing of transactions.
