A2A payments continue to grow
The number of domestic account-to-account transfers (A2A credit transfers) has risen by 18% over the past three years, from 1.92 billion in 2022 to 2.27 billion in 2025. The number of transfers from the Netherlands to other European countries has risen by as much as 63% over the same period, from 204 million to 332 million. The number of domestic direct debits also continues to grow, by 9% since 2022. This is apparent from DNB figures on A2A payments from 2022 onwards.

The average amount for domestic A2A transfers is falling from €1,552 per transfer in 2022 to €1,424 in 2025. The increasing use of mobile payment requests (such as Tikkies) to settle small amounts between family, friends and acquaintances is contributing to this, as is the rising number iDEAL|Wero payments, with an average amount of around €100. Behind the scenes, these are all A2A credit transfers involving relatively small amounts.
A new type of A2A payment
Since the end of 2019, a business or institution can initiate an electronic transfer digitally from a customer’s payment account at any bank in the EU, provided that the customer gives explicit and secure digital consent. This is not a direct debit but a so-called PISP payment, initiated digitally by a Payment Initiation Service Provider.
An example of a PISP payment is ‘Pay-by-Bank’, whereby a web shop, with the buyer’s consent, sets up a ready-to-go credit transfer, which the buyer should simply approve digitally via his or her own bank. Once approved, the purchase amount is credited to the web shop’s payment account within a few seconds.
In 2025, the share of PISP payments(opens in new window) was still less than 1% of all domestic A2A payments. However, for credit transfers to other European countries, the share of PISP payments is much higher, at 4%. In 2025, more than twice as many PISP payments crossed the border as were made domestically.
