Trial passengers positive about train travel using a payment card

The first experiences of participants in the ‘Travel with your payment card’ trial have been predominantly positive. This is shown by customer research covering the first months of the trial on the Leiden–The Hague railway route.

Since January, around one thousand trial passengers on this route have been able to check in and out with NS using their debit or credit card. The trial will continue until the summer.
The research shows that participants find travelling with a payment card just as easy as travelling with the Dutch OV-chipkaart public transport card.

No need to top up a balance

Passengers see it as an advantage that they do not need to load a balance onto a card: their travel costs are debited from their bank account at the end of the day. They also find it convenient that they already carry their ‘travel pass’ and do not need to buy an OV-chipkaart. Trial passengers can also make suggestions. They would like to be able to check in and out at more gates than are currently available for the trial, and would like the process to be slightly faster.
