Checking In and Out on Public Transportation Is Now Even Smoother with Your Smartphone
From now on, you can check in and out on Dutch public transportation even more smoothly using your smartphone with Express-OV (on iPhones) or OV Payments (on Android devices). Once you’ve enabled this public transit setting for a specific digital payment card on your smartphone, you can use it to check in and out without first unlocking your phone; you can simply hold your smartphone directly from your pocket or bag against the transit card reader, without needing facial recognition, a fingerprint, or a passcode. At HTM in The Hague, this feature is expected to become available sometime in September.

The setting for Express-OV or public transit payments on smartphones is turned off by default; you must enable it yourself first. Once enabled, it works only for checking in and out on public transit. For regular payments, such as in stores and restaurants, you must always unlock your digital payment card on your smartphone first, even if you’ve enabled the public transit setting.
