Self-service fuel limit increased to €200

All Dutch banks and their transaction processors have agreed to increase the pre-authorisation amount for card payments at self-service fuel pumps to €200 per fill-up. This means that customers can use a payment card to buy and pay for up to €200 of fuel per visit at these pumps.

The banks that issue debit or credit cards to their account holders are ready for the higher pre-authorisation amount of €200. Elsewhere in the payment chain, other parties still need to update their processes and systems, including filling-station operators, their payment-terminal suppliers and transaction processors. As a result, some unattended filling stations may for the time being still limit payment-card transactions to €125 or €150 per fill-up. The Dutch Payments Association is coordinating all parties involved in the chain.

Customers can always buy more fuel in additional transactions, each for up to €200. If someone has less than €200 available on their payment card, they can still buy fuel up to the amount available on the card. At attended filling stations, customers can usually buy more than €200 of fuel without a deposit. They then pay at the filling-station checkout.
