More than half a billion debit card payments in one month
A new debit card payment record was set in June: more than half a billion debit card payments in one month . The total rose from 496 million payments in May to 505 million in June. The value of debit card payments at the point of sale was €12.8 billion in both months.

Nine out of ten debit card payments are now contactless. Four out of ten contactless payments are cardless and made with a smartphone or smartwatch. Some new mobile payment terminals, such as terminals on retailers’ smartphones, support contactless payments only. A debit card cannot be inserted into these terminals.
Contactless payments are not only quick and easy; they are also secure . For contactless payments of up to and including €50, customers usually do not have to enter a PIN. This gives pickpockets and fraudsters less opportunity to secretly observe the PIN .
