Gottfried Leibbrandt appointed new chair of the Dutch Payments Association

At the General Meeting of Members of the Dutch Payments Association on 19 May 2022, Gottfried Leibbrandt was appointed as its new independent chair. Leibbrandt holds a PhD in economics from Maastricht University and has held positions including partner at McKinsey and, until 2019, CEO of SWIFT .

Leibbrandt shares the Dutch Payments Association’s ambition to keep the Dutch payments sector at the forefront of Europe through broad and productive cooperation. Asked why he wanted to chair the Dutch Payments Association, he said: “I am a ‘payments nerd’ and have been fascinated by payments throughout my career. Payments serve a social purpose; they are something we do together. The Dutch Payments Association is a unique organisation where all participants in the payments ecosystem sit around the same table: providers and users of payment services, not only members but other stakeholders too.”

Gijs Boudewijn, acting managing director of the Dutch Payments Association, welcomed the appointment: “Gottfried is an international authority and the perfect candidate to help us fulfil our mission: working with our members to contribute to accessible, reliable, efficient and secure payments.”

Leibbrandt was born in 1961, lives in Brussels with his wife and has three adult children. He grew up in The Hague and completed his secondary education at Christelijk Gymnasium Sorghvliet. He travels extensively for work, speaks four foreign languages and is an ocean sailor.

‘All digital?’

Following the General Meeting of Members and Leibbrandt’s appointment, the Dutch Payments Association is holding its annual conference for members and payments stakeholders, where it will also celebrate its tenth anniversary. Entitled ‘All digital?’, the conference focuses on the opportunities and challenges presented by the continuing digitalisation of payments.
