Not satisfied? Get your money back by debit card

Customers returning an item to a shop can now have the purchase amount refunded to their bank account through the payment terminal. This is possible at shops offering Rabobank’s Retourpinnen debit card refund service. Fashion retailer Score is the first to offer the reverse debit card transaction at all 80 of its locations. The service works with every debit card, regardless of the customer’s bank.

payment terminal (PIN terminal) with green screen confirming a refund: “REFUND TOTAL €33.95 OK?”, with a “Return PIN” sign in the background.

Rabobank is the first bank ready to offer Retourpinnen to businesses. ABN AMRO and ING will also introduce the service for businesses in 2014. “Retourpinnen meets a long-standing request from the retail sector,” says Fred van Pouderoijen, Business Payments Manager at Rabobank. “It is more efficient and secure for the business, but certainly also for the consumer. More and more customers prefer not to receive cash when they return an item or recover a deposit.”

Dutch banks are introducing Retourpinnen at the request of retailers. Tom Ponjee, Secretary for Payments at the Dutch Retail Council, says: “Retourpinnen makes debit cards even easier for customers to use. It also means we need less change in the till, improving security for the retailer, employees and customers.”

Customers returning items they have already paid for insert their card into the payment terminal, after which the retailer initiates the refund. Once the instruction has been accepted, the customer receives a signed refund receipt as proof. The amount is credited to the customer’s account on the next working day.

Retourpinnen works with all debit cards, but only for purchases that were also paid for by card. Cash payments, gift cards, store credit vouchers, iDEAL payments and Chipknip payments are not eligible. Businesses do not need a new payment terminal and can apply for Retourpinnen through their bank.

Score, a men’s jeans retailer, is the first chain to have software enabling Retourpinnen through its payment terminals. Olaf Zwijnenburg, Commercial Director of Score Group, says: “Retourpinnen fits perfectly with the customer-focused service we offer at Score. We never make things difficult, give our customers genuine attention and always offer our male audience excellent service. By offering Retourpinnen, we can keep less cash in our shops while still giving customers an optimal choice.”

“Score is an innovative retailer. We were ahead of the curve when we installed our Score Connect Spots, integrating our successful score.nl webshop into all 80 physical shops. By offering Retourpinnen, Score is once again at the forefront of the latest developments in customer service.”
