COVID-19 and Christmas bulletin: update 24 December

Update through 24 December 2020: debit card transactions down 35%, iDEAL payments up 60%.

The closure of most shops, the hospitality sector and all cultural institutions is clearly reflected in the number and value of debit card payments. During the seven shopping days through Wednesday 24 December, both volume and value were 35% lower than in the same period a year earlier. Supermarkets and food shops saw barely any more customers paying by debit card at the checkout than the previous year, even though debit card payment volume had grown by an average of around 10% a year in recent years.
