Black Friday and Cyber Monday: physical shops leave the pandemic behind
Physical shops recorded stronger sales in the week up to and including Cyber Monday, which included Black Friday, than in the same week of 2021. Around 116 million debit card payments were made at shop checkouts, approximately 15% more than in 2021. The estimated value of debit card payments was €3.01 billion, around 10% higher than last year.

Between Tuesday 22 and Monday 28 November, roughly 31 million online payments were made with iDEAL, with an estimated total value of €2.76 billion, about the same as last year.
Compared with a recent ordinary week, online shops benefited more from Black Friday and Cyber Monday than physical shops. Debit and credit card payments in physical shops were around 10% higher than in an ordinary week, while credit card and iDEAL payments in online shops were approximately 30% higher.
The fact that online purchases barely increased during the bargain week compared with last year appears to be due mainly to the coronavirus restrictions in force at the time. Those restrictions led to a surge in online purchases last year, while point-of-sale purchases lagged far behind earlier years.
