Direct debit failed or reversed by consumer: consequences for the creditor

The illustration shows what happens when a direct debit fails or is reversed by the consumer: from lost revenue and additional administrative tasks to possible damage to the creditor’s reputation. Good communication and offering alternative payment methods help creditors to limit these risks.

Direct debit failed: causes on the consumer side

Direct debit reversed by consumer (reversed)

Consumers have the right to unconditionally reverse (reverse) a direct debit afterwards, no later than 56 days after the debit. This illustration shows how this works on the part of the consumer and their bank.
