Digital Euro Working Group

The Digital Euro Functional and Technical Working Group examines how the digital euro, as designed by the Eurosystem, fits functionally and technically within payments in the Netherlands. The working group brings together expertise from banks, payment institutions and umbrella organisations to determine what is needed for secure and efficient implementation. The impact on existing systems, processes and infrastructure is central to its work. The working group helps the sector make well-informed and timely decisions about a potential new European payment instrument.

Objectives

  • Promote knowledge exchange on the digital euro and the Digital Euro Service Platform
  • Develop insight into the functional and technical impact of the digital euro on the Dutch payment landscape
  • Explore the role and requirements of payment service providers within the digital euro ecosystem
  • Prepare preconditions and an action plan for a proof of concept
  • Contribute to sector-wide preparation for possible introduction of the digital euro

  • Analysis of the Digital Euro Service Platform

    The working group analyses the latest components of the Digital Euro Service Platform and examines how they relate technically and functionally to payments in the Netherlands. It also considers missing or unclear elements in the Eurosystem documentation.

  • Role of payment service providers in the digital euro ecosystem

    The working group examines the role of payment service providers in the future digital euro ecosystem, including requirements, responsibilities and integration with existing processes and infrastructure.

  • Preparation of a proof of concept

    The working group is developing the conditions for a potential proof of concept. This will provide greater insight into what is needed to explore the digital euro in practice and assess the value this new payment instrument could offer in the Netherlands.

The working group has developed joint insights into the functional and technical impact of the digital euro on payments in the Netherlands. These analyses form a shared basis for further preparation within the sector.

Recommendations for added value within payments in the Netherlands

The working group has formulated recommendations on how the digital euro could add value to payments in the Netherlands. These recommendations are shared with the constituencies of the participating organisations.

Preparation for further analysis and a proof of concept

The working group is working on further deepening the impact picture and on an action plan for a proof of concept. This will work towards a more concrete exploration of possible application and implementation.
