The closure of most shops, the entire hospitality sector and all cultural institutions is clearly reflected in the number and value of debit card payments at points of sale.

Since Tuesday 15 December, debit card payment volume has been more than 35% lower than in the same period last year, while the value has been 40% lower. Even supermarkets saw 5% fewer customers paying by debit card at the checkout than a year earlier.
