Payments newsletter: Betaaljournaal 12

Published on:

You will no doubt recognise it: straight after the summer holidays, the meetings and appointments came thick and fast. Fortunately, we can now occasionally meet in person again, rather than from our home offices via Teams, Webex or Zoom. It was wonderful to see so many of you in person at the Currence Beach Event, Future of Payments, Money20/20 and one of our own events!

And of course, we were looking forward to welcoming everyone back to our traditional Annual Conference in November. I am therefore sorry that we had to decide to postpone the conference. Following Piet’s departure last year, there was still simply too much going on internally to put together a strong conference programme. But it is only postponed, not cancelled. In the new year we will organise an engaging Annual Conference, not least because we would also like to raise a glass with you to the Dutch Payments Association’s tenth anniversary.

For now, please turn your attention to the new edition of our payments newsletter, Betaaljournaal. Read, among other things, about accessibility and Safe Banking. And be sure to meet Chantal Frederiksz of Sisow by Buckaroo!

Accessibility in payments

Infographic on digitalisation and accessibility in payments

Payments are rapidly becoming digital. Most people appreciate this because they can arrange many things from home without paper. Banks and payment institutions provide accessible digital services and products that enable people in vulnerable situations to pay and manage their banking effectively. This infographic shows how digitalisation and accessibility in payments are developing. You can also listen to this infographic. Also read what banks are doing to improve accessibility. Finally, watch the latest episode of betaalTV about accessibility in payments.

Follow-up campaign with Jandino launched

Jandino Asporaat warns a young person about phishing
Jandino Asporaat warns a young person about money muling

In early February 2021, together with Jandino Asporaat, we began our mission to make banking safer for young people in the Netherlands. Engaging sketches, in which Jandino confronts young people with their unsafe payment behaviour in a humorous but serious way, introduced them to the five security rules . Now it is time for the next step, because our work is not yet done. Two types of fraud deserve extra attention: money muling and phishing . The sketches follow the same format as the previous videos, but a little more explanation is needed to convey the message. Just before making a mistake, the young person is jolted awake by Jandino, after which the video shows what safe behaviour looks like.
Both videos will be promoted to young people aged 18 to 25 on YouTube, Instagram and Snapchat from 18 October to 8 November. Watch the phishing video now .

Alert Online: get started!

Baker holding a payment terminal during Security Week

October is European Cybersecurity Month. During this period, Alert Online partners, including banks and the Dutch Payments Association, organise various activities under the Alert Online banner. Ahead of the darker days of the year, this helps draw employees’ and customers’ attention to cybersecurity. This year’s Alert Online theme is: Get started! The aim is to go a step beyond raising cyber awareness and actually take action. In our view, Alert Online: get started against social engineering! and Alert Online: get started with two-factor authentication! are particularly important activities.

Milestone: more than half of online shoppers use a smartphone

Infographic with figures from the Thuiswinkel Market Monitor for Q2 2021

The COVID-19 pandemic has dramatically accelerated the e-commerce market, and with almost 91 million online purchases in Q2, that growth does not appear to have ended. Around 12% of all purchases were made online in the second quarter. As in Q1, this was significantly higher than in the same period last year. The third quarter will show whether the share of online shopping remains this high now that physical shops have fully reopened. As the lockdown was not lifted until the end of Q2, this effect is not yet visible. Read the full article.

The most common mistake innovators make is using themselves as a blueprint for the average consumer. We therefore developed a set of five personas whose payment behaviour we regularly track. Patricia Zwaan, market researcher at the Dutch Payments Association, discusses them on the De Nieuwe Knikkers podcast. Bank-at-home fraud

Fraudster posing as a bank employee visits an older person at home

Scammers pose as bank employees on the phone and falsely tell customers that someone is breaking into their bank account. Someone from the bank supposedly then needs to visit the victim at home to collect something or to change or configure something in online banking. A fake senior citizen adviser, care adviser or bank courier may then appear at the front door. Veiligbankieren.nl is actively warning the public about this type of fraud. A television commercial about the subject will air again from week 44. Read the full article .
