The Digital Euro and Stablecoins: Apples and Oranges
Developments surrounding the digital euro and cryptocurrencies are moving quickly. Blockchains, bitcoins, dollar-pegged stablecoins, euro-pegged stablecoins, wholesale CBDC, retail digital euro; sometimes it’s hard to see the forest for the trees… For example, the digital euro has recently been incorrectly presented as a good European counterpart to US dollar-pegged stablecoins. However, the digital euro and stablecoins are like apples and oranges; they target different applications and users.

In a previous joint opinion piece by the Dutch Banking Association and the Dutch Payments Association, we explain why the (retail) digital euro is not a solution to (wholesale) dollar-pegged stablecoins and which European digital currencies can provide a solution.
In opinieblad Forum vertelt een crypto-deskundige van de Betaalvereniging wat het belang is van Europese euro-stablecoins, in relatie tot de snelle opmars van Amerikaanse dollar-stablecoins.
