More than 10 million card payments on Saturday before Christmas

Published on:

People in the Netherlands made more than 10 million card payments with debit and credit cards on Saturday, four days before Christmas, the Dutch Payments Association announced.

The total was a few hundred thousand card payments lower than on the Saturday before Christmas last year. However, last year only two days remained for Christmas shopping after Saturday, compared with three this year.

The Dutch Payments Association recorded more than 10.3 million card payments at the largest processors up to 5 pm on Saturday. The busiest period was between 2:30 and 3 pm, when 457 transactions were made per second.

The Association expects the one billionth debit card transaction in the supermarket sector to take place in the coming days.

* Editor’s note: the one billionth debit card transaction took place on Monday 23 December at a DEEN supermarket on Rijnstraat in Amsterdam.
