Study into the costs and benefits of payments in 2021
In October 2022, the Dutch Payments Association presented its Study into the costs and benefits of payments for financial institutions in 2021 to its members and stakeholders. For the first time since 2006, this gives us a detailed picture of the costs and revenues.

Payments in the Netherlands are highly efficient, and the fees paid by users are far lower than the European average. Transaction volumes have more than doubled compared with 2005, while processing costs have risen by only 5%. Nevertheless, the banks recorded a combined loss of €570 million on payments in 2021, compared with a loss of €23 million in 2005. This was due partly to a sharp decline in net interest income and partly to higher risk and compliance costs. The Dutch Payments Association and its members therefore wish to engage in an open dialogue with all stakeholders to determine how the high standards of security, efficiency, reliability, accessibility and inclusivity of our payments can be funded sustainably in the future.
