Payments in 2022 focused on sustainable funding and digital fallback options for debit card payments
In 2022, the Dutch Payments Association’s activities focused primarily on sustainable funding for payments, digital fallback options for debit card payments, the accessibility of collective payment services and adapting payment terminals for Debit Mastercard and Visa Debit. These and many other topics are covered in the Dutch Payments Association’s 2022 Annual Report. The first three themes will continue to require attention in 2023.

It is vital that as many people in the Netherlands as possible can continue to make payments and manage their banking independently. Thanks to the joint efforts of our members, good accessibility has become an integral part of the payment services on offer. Our understanding of the impact of increasing digitalisation has also deepened, enabling further improvements to the accessibility of payments in the period ahead.
As the use of cash continues to decline, robust digital alternatives for debit card payments at the point of sale are becoming increasingly important. The cost of collective payment services for our members far exceeds the income they generate. This raises questions about future-proof funding for the high levels of security, efficiency, reliability, accessibility and inclusivity in our payments.
