More than 100 million point-of-sale payments by smartphone in March

In March, more than 100 million payments were made by smartphone at physical points of sale in the Netherlands in a single month for the first time. Some 23% of all debit card payments are now made without a physical debit card, predominantly using mobile phones—almost one in four. Nine out of ten debit card payments are now contactless.

Last month, 439 million debit card payments were made at Dutch points of sale, with a total value of €11.5 billion. The number of transactions was 34% higher than in March 2021 and 17% higher than in March 2019, the last March without COVID-19 restrictions before the start of the pandemic. The value of debit card payments in March was 28% higher than a year earlier and 22% higher than in 2019.
