IBAN conversion tool now available at OveropIBAN.nl

Anyone wishing to look up a Dutch IBAN could use the website www.OveropIBAN.nl. The site offered a conversion tool that converted old account numbers into the IBANs required to transfer money. The National Forum on the Payment System (NFPS; link in Dutch) decided to introduce the service on 21 May 2015 after demand for an official account-number conversion service remained high. Europe had fully switched to IBAN, European credit transfers and European direct debits on 1 August 2014.

The IBAN conversion tool was an initiative of the Dutch Payments Association and DNB. Users could enter the old account number and the name of the corresponding bank on the website, after which the tool returned the corresponding IBAN. Banks would add a link to the tool on the pages of their websites where customers used mobile and internet banking.

The need for an official website offering this service arose from the proliferation of alternative conversion websites, which were not always reliable. Consumers also sometimes found it difficult to locate other people’s IBANs. The best approach remained to ask the other person for their IBAN directly.

Within the NFPS, where umbrella organisations representing banks, consumers, retailers and businesses discuss payments, it was also agreed to make IBANs more readily available in other ways. Banks would accelerate the issue of new debit cards showing the IBAN. Business organisations again called on their members to include their IBANs on invoices, websites and other communications.

The NFPS (link in Dutch) promotes the security, reliability, accessibility and efficiency of Dutch payments. It has a broad membership representing providers and users of payments and is chaired by DNB.
