Dutch abroad pay most with cards in Spanish hospitality

Published on:

Dutch people who pay by debit or credit card in foreign hospitality venues during the summer months spend the most in Spanish hospitality (€684 million in the third quarter of 2025). Spain is followed by France and Italy (with €504 million and €450 million respectively in the same quarter). In other quarters too, Dutch people spend more in Spanish hospitality than in hospitality venues in other countries, with the exception of the first quarter (January to March), when Dutch people spend the most in Austrian hospitality (€399 million in the winter of 2026). In domestic hospitality, Dutch people pay with cards nearly ten times more during the summer months as they do in Spain (€6.49 billion). This is evident from new figures from DNB on card payments(opens in new window) at points-of sale and online, made by Dutch people in the Netherlands and abroad.

The top three countries where Dutch people spent the most using payment cards across all sectors from May to June 2026 (working months) were Germany, Ireland and France. In Ireland, we made a significant number of card payments for services, likely primarily to global online service providers that have their European headquarters in Ireland; examples include Google, Meta, Apple and Microsoft in Dublin. In Germany and France, card payments were mainly made at points-of-sale, in the retail and hospitality sectors.
