Debit card payments reach record high in 2011

People in the Netherlands made more debit card payments in 2011 than ever before. The number of debit card payments rose from 2.15 billion to 2.29 billion in a single year, while total turnover increased from €81 billion to €83 billion. This increase coincided with a decline in the use of cash, according to recent research by DNB. The number of cash payments at the point of sale fell from 4.4 billion to 4.1 billion in 2011, while their total value decreased from €53 billion to €51 billion.
