Cash accepted at 96% of points of sale

In 2025, consumers could still pay cash at almost every point of sale in the Netherlands: 96% accepted cash. The share of locations accepting cash has remained around 95% for years, according to research on cash acceptance conducted annually by De Nederlandsche Bank (DNB).

Cash is most often refused at car parks, cinemas and pharmacies. In 2025, cash acceptance improved at cinemas and pharmacies. Car parks, by contrast, accepted cash less often than a year earlier. Cash can almost always be used in small shops, such as specialist food shops and convenience stores, as well as at markets.
