Cash Working Group

The Cash Working Group discusses developments concerning cash and its availability in the Netherlands. The working group focuses on coordination between banks and Geldmaat and monitors matters that require joint attention. These include availability, accessibility, national and European regulation, and developments in the cash infrastructure. Close coordination between banks, Geldmaat and De Nederlandsche Bank as an observer allows developments to be monitored closely.

Current topics within the working group

  • Cash availability and reachability

    The working group monitors developments in the availability of cash in the Netherlands. It considers the reachability of ATMs, the role of Geldmaat and the practical consequences of changes in use and regulation.

  • Obligation to accept cash

    The working group discusses developments around the acceptance of cash. Attention is paid to national and European regulations, including the question of when cash should be accepted as legal tender.

  • Cash Payments Act

    The working group monitors the Cash Payments Act and other relevant cash regulation. These developments are important to the availability, accessibility and affordability of cash in the Netherlands.

What have we achieved so far?

Contributing to cash policymaking

The working group has contributed to policy-making and advice on cash payments in recent years. In doing so, it supports the Dutch Payments Association with questions about the future, availability and accessibility of cash.

Coordination between banks and Geldmaat

The working group ensures structural coordination between banks and Geldmaat on cash issues. Through this cooperation, developments in the cash chain can be discussed in a timely manner and, where necessary, brought to the attention of the management or the board.

Monitoring of national and international developments

The working group monitors national and international cash developments, including input from De Nederlandsche Bank and the Cash Efficiency Working Group of the European Payments Council. This keeps the sector connected to broader developments in European payments.
