Chipknip to be discontinued

Chipknip can no longer be used after 1 January 2015. Based on market developments and consultations with stakeholders, Currence has decided to discontinue Chipknip, bringing the Dutch electronic payment method to an end after 17 years.

Small amounts are increasingly paid by debit card, making Chipknip increasingly unnecessary. The number of Chipknip transactions therefore fell sharply from 171.7 million in 2011 to 148.2 million in 2012, a decrease of 14%. Chipknip costs would rise because investments would soon be required to maintain its infrastructure and bring the service into line with European SEPA rules.
