Higher turnover despite fewer debit card payments in October

In October 2020, around 413 million domestic debit card payments were made, roughly 5% fewer than in October 2019. In September, debit card payments had still been 9.3% higher than a year earlier. For 2020 through October, the total number of debit card payments remained around 7.5% above the same period in 2019. April recorded the sharpest fall of the year, with 10.3% fewer debit card payments than a year earlier.

Although the number of debit card payments declined in October, their value rose by around 7% to approximately €11 billion. In September, the value had been 17.2% higher than a year earlier. April was the only month in 2020 when the value of domestic debit card payments also fell, by 7.1%. July recorded the strongest increase of the year, at 22.3% compared with a year earlier.

Far more debit card payments in the domestic travel sector

Debit card payments in the travel sector were around 65% more frequent in October than a year earlier. These were payments made by Dutch consumers in the Netherlands. The number of payment transactions made by Dutch consumers to and in other countries is likely to have fallen sharply. Those transactions are also often paid with iDEAL and credit cards.
