Managing Director of the Dutch Payments Association steps down

Managing Director Piet Mallekoote will step down from the Dutch Payments Association on 1 March. Mallekoote is retiring, and Gijs Boudewijn, the Association’s current Deputy Managing Director, will succeed him as Managing Director ad interim for an as yet unspecified period.

Piet Mallekoote began his career in 1979 as an economist at De Nederlandsche Bank. He left in 2004 as Director of Payments to become first Deputy Managing Director and later Managing Director of Currence, the independent brand and product owner of the collective payment methods PIN, Chipknip, Acceptgiro and direct debit. iDEAL was added in 2006, followed later by digital direct debit mandates and iDIN. Since the Dutch Payments Association was established at the end of 2011, Mallekoote has combined his role as CEO of Currence with that of Managing Director of the Association. It has been decided that the two roles will no longer be combined after his departure. It was previously announced that he will hand over his role as CEO of Currence on 1 March to Daniel van Delft, formerly Visa’s Country Manager in the Netherlands.

“I am proud of the Dutch Payments Association’s connecting role in Dutch payments and that I have had the privilege of leading it since its establishment,” Mallekoote reflects. “Highlights of recent years included the introduction of EMV debit card payments in the Netherlands, IBAN, SEPA, PSD1, PSD2 and Instant Payments. The next challenges for Gijs Boudewijn and his team will be the further digitalisation and harmonisation of European retail payments, with initiatives such as the European Payments Initiative (EPI) and Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC).”

Gijs Boudewijn was born in 1958 and has worked in the banking sector since 1983, beginning as a lawyer at a large savings bank. From 1988, he served as secretary at Bankgirocentrale and Interpay (now equensWorldline), which played a pivotal role in transaction processing for Dutch payments. Before joining the Dutch Payments Association in 2014, Boudewijn worked at the Dutch Banking Association for almost sixteen years, most recently as Head of Payments and Security. Over the past decades, he has held numerous international positions on behalf of the Dutch payments sector.
