Workshop on agentic payments and the EUDI Wallet

What will happen when digital agents start making purchases, preparing choices, or initiating payments on behalf of consumers or businesses? And what role can the European digital identity, the EUDI Wallet, play in this?
Kevin Meijer of the Dutch Payments Association is the group leader for Consumer Payments within WE BUILD. Together with the Agentic Commerce Research Team, he brought together various parties from across Europe for a workshop on the combination of the EUDI Wallet, agentic commerce, and payments. The meeting took place in Amsterdam and attracted participants from the European payments sector and the ecosystem for digital identity and wallets.
The workshop focused on how the EUDI Wallet can contribute to future forms of digital payments. Discussions centered on situations where digital agents perform actions on behalf of users. This offers opportunities for convenience and innovation, but also raises questions about consent, security, reliability, the transparency of involved parties, and the role of payment service providers.
For the Dutch Payments Association, it is important to closely monitor these developments and to continue the dialogue with other parties. Digital identity, wallets, and new forms of interaction such as agent-based commerce can influence the way consumers, businesses, and payment service providers interact and make payments with one another in the future.
The workshop was part of WE BUILD, a European consortium investigating how the EUDI Wallet can add value to digital payments and business applications, among other things.
