Sharp rise in payments between Black Friday and Cyber Monday
At points of sale and online, consumers paid substantially more often by debit card and iDEAL from Friday 23 to Monday 26 November—Black Friday through Cyber Monday—than during a normal Monday-to-Friday period in October. The number of iDEAL payments was 72 per cent higher than usual, while debit cards were used 16 per cent more often.
Estimated turnover of €2.35 billion
Almost 58 million payments were made at payment terminals, totalling more than €1.5 billion. More than 10 million iDEAL payments were made, totalling around €850 million. The increase during the sales period can probably be attributed entirely to non-food retail.
The number of transactions also increased compared with Black Friday through Cyber Monday in 2017. The number of iDEAL payments rose by 38 per cent year on year, in line with iDEAL’s normal annual growth. On Black Friday itself, however, growth in the number of iDEAL payments was more than a quarter above the annual rate. The number of debit card payments increased by 21 per cent compared with last year, more than twice the normal annual growth of this payment method.
