Physical shops and restaurants pay an average of €0.68 per online payment
The Dutch Payments Association and Dutch point-of-sale businesses (retailers, filling stations and hospitality businesses) commissioned a study into the cost of online payments for physical SME shops and restaurants with their own webshops. They pay an average of €0.68 per online payment. This is considerably more than the cost of an in-store payment at the businesses studied, which averages €0.26 for a debit card, credit card or cash payment.

For the second time, Panteia studied the cost of online payments for these point-of-sale businesses. The first study covered 2017; the new study examined 2020. Because restaurants made many online sales during the pandemic, they were also included in the new study. Nearly 24,500 shops and restaurants were examined. Together, they processed more than 67 million online transactions worth €3.6 billion. Online-only shops and large companies with a webshop were not included.
Of the businesses in the study, 90% offer iDEAL as a payment method, while more than one third also accept credit cards, bank transfers and payment on delivery. iDEAL is by far the most widely used method (73% of all online payments), followed at a considerable distance by payment on delivery (13%). Other payment methods are used only sparingly by this type of webshop (4% or less).
The total cost of online payments was €39.0 million, equivalent to 1.2% of the revenue generated by those payments. For physical SME shops, the cost of an online payment fell by more than 11% in 2020 compared with 2017.
