Higher conversion rates for webshops with 3-D Secure

Published on:

Webshops can now achieve higher payment conversion rates for online card payments thanks to the EMV 3-D Secure standard for two-step verification.

Under EU legislation, webshops must fully support the EMV 3-D Secure standard for card payments (3DS) by 31 December 2020. Card issuers will increasingly decline payments made without 3DS because they consider the risk of fraud to be high. With 3DS, cardholders can be verified quickly and securely, for example using a fingerprint or mobile PIN. Card issuers will approve payments with 3DS verification much more often.

Not using 3DS yet? Contact your payment service provider

Many webshops are already prepared to use 3DS for online card payments. Those that are not yet ready or have questions can contact their payment service provider or acquirer, which can explain how merchants can benefit from it.

More payments declined

Merchants that switch to 3DS now can test it thoroughly and at their own pace, while immediately benefiting from higher conversion rates. The latest version supported by Dutch card issuers, which offers the best customer experience, is 3DS v2.x. In the coming months, webshops will increasingly be notified that card payments without 3DS verification have been declined unless the customer is subsequently verified using 3DS. From 1 January 2021, virtually all online card payments without 3DS will be irrevocably declined.

SCA Migration Project

The Dutch Payments Association coordinates the SCA Migration Project in the Netherlands. The project brings together all stakeholders involved in online card payments, including umbrella organisations representing webshops, consumer organisations, card schemes such as American Express , Mastercard and Visa , card issuers such as banks, acquirers and De Nederlandsche Bank . Its aim is to ensure the smooth and timely introduction of two-step verification for online card payments.
