Dutch Payments Association contributes to NCSC cybersecurity report

The National Cyber Security Centre (in Dutch) , part of the National Coordinator for Security and Counterterrorism, has published its annual report on cybersecurity in the Netherlands, Cybersecuritybeeld Nederland (CSBN) 2016. The Dutch Payments Association and its members contributed to the report.

The report provides insight into threats, resilience and related cybersecurity developments in the Netherlands. It is produced in close cooperation with public and private organisations, including the Dutch Payments Association. Its aim is to identify ways to keep the internet secure. It emphasises the exchange of information between private and public organisations so they can take a united stand against cybercrime.

CSBN 2016 identifies four major cybersecurity threats:

  1. Professional criminal activity. Professional criminals are becoming increasingly well organised, enabling them to carry out prolonged and sophisticated operations.
  2. Espionage. Digital economic espionage by foreign intelligence services is increasing. CSBN 2016 expresses concern that this is putting the Netherlands’ competitive position under pressure.
  3. Malvertising. Advertising networks are not yet able to tackle malvertising effectively. Malvertising is malware embedded in seemingly legitimate online advertisements.
  4. Ransomware. Ransomware is becoming increasingly sophisticated and widespread. It is malware that makes computer data inaccessible. Victims must pay a ransom to regain access to the data being held hostage.

The Dutch Payments Association, Dutch banks and its other members recognise these trends and are taking appropriate measures.
