Coronavirus bulletin update: strong growth in debit card and iDEAL payments in August
Published on:
The number of transactions made by debit card at the checkout and online with iDEAL was considerably higher in August than in the same month a year earlier. Debit card payments rose by 16% and iDEAL payments by 38.3%.

The average year-on-year increase in the monthly number of payments is around 10% for debit card payments and around 28% for iDEAL.
Up to 2019, August was generally a quiet month for domestic payments at the checkout and online because of the holidays. One explanation for the relatively high number of payments in August during the COVID-19 year 2020 is that many more people in the Netherlands spent their summer holiday in the country or even stayed at home.
