Banks and DigiHandig help digital beginners practise mobile banking with confidence

Published on:

DigiHandig, the four largest Dutch banks, the Dutch Payments Association and the Dutch Banking Association are launching a new section in the DigiHandig app. The app lets ‘digital beginners’ (people with limited digital skills) familiarise themselves safely with mobile banking. DigiHandig now also shows how banks’ mobile banking apps work, using simple interactive demonstrations and exercises.

This initiative supports the Digital Inclusion Manifesto of the Alliantie Digitaal Samenleven . The manifesto considers improving users’ digital skills essential and calls for as many different forms of support as possible. Through the DigiHandig app, the banks are further developing their Accessible Banking programme to remove barriers to digital banking and payments.

Banks join forces to remove barriers

One in six Dutch adults struggles with digital services, according to several studies. Banking and payments are also becoming increasingly digital and are increasingly carried out using mobile apps on smartphones and tablets. Banks want to help digital beginners keep up with these developments, and the DigiHandig app can support them.

Digital beginners often feel thrown in at the deep end when using banks’ mobile apps. Because money and banking are sensitive matters, they worry that they may make a mistake in a mobile banking app and lose money. As a result, they are reluctant to use the app.

The new lesson in the DigiHandig app allows digital beginners to explore and practise mobile banking safely at their own pace before using their bank’s real app.

Getting to know mobile banking at your own pace

The DigiHandig app explains, among other things, that every change or payment in a mobile banking app must first be explicitly approved using a security code, fingerprint or facial recognition. Digital beginners can safely try this out in the practice app at their leisure, without any real transactions taking place. They can also use the DigiHandig app to learn how to log in on a mobile device, check payments, block a debit card and much more. After sufficient practice, digital beginners can start using their own bank’s mobile banking app with greater confidence.

“I am happy that mobile banking is included in DigiHandig. I thought mobile banking would be difficult, but it is actually easier than I expected. The practice lessons have given me a better understanding,” says Mia Parren from Delft about the new lesson.

The DigiHandig app is available free of charge from the Apple and Google app stores or at https://www.digihandig.nl/download . Install the app yourself or help someone else install it.
