Banks are calling out social media platforms for their role in fraud and scams

Losses from bank help desk fraud rose by more than €3 million, reaching €25.8 million in 2025. Losses for bank customers resulting from phishing also increased by €1.8 million, to nearly €2.6 million, according to the Dutch Banking Association (NVB).

Big tech and social media platforms can do much more to protect their users against these and other forms of online fraud. That is why Dutch banks are calling on companies such as Meta, TikTok, and Google to take additional measures. Research shows that 70% of all online fraud today begins on social media. Therefore, measures from these very companies are essential to combat fraud and scams.
