DNB launches Switch to IBAN app

Published on:

Amsterdam – From now on, everyone can keep their own IBAN and that of others within easy reach on their smartphone. Today, on behalf of the National Forum on the SEPA Migration (NFS), De Nederlandsche Bank (DNB) is launching the official Switch to IBAN app.

Research by DNB shows that 57% of consumers do not know where to find their own IBAN. In addition, 65% do not know where to find someone else’s IBAN.

The Switch to IBAN app will make it even easier for smartphone users to look up an IBAN. The app is a conversion tool: after users enter their current Dutch account number, it displays the corresponding International Bank Account Number (IBAN). The Switch to IBAN app was developed by the IBAN BIC Service in cooperation with DNB on behalf of the NFS. “The app has been developed with great care and in direct cooperation with Dutch banks. This makes the app safe and reliable,” says Frank Elderson, Executive Director of DNB.

Cross-border payments

From 1 February 2014, only IBAN and BIC will be used within Europe for both domestic and cross-border payments. Businesses and consumers can already find their IBAN through their own bank: on bank statements, in online banking, on new debit cards and at www.overopIBAN.nl. From today, they can also use the Switch to IBAN app. This is particularly useful when a business asks for your IBAN. Android and Windows smartphone users and iPhone users can download the app free of charge from their app store. The app is also available through www.overopIBAN.nl.

IBAN migration

In the Netherlands, the migration to IBAN is being coordinated by the National Forum on the SEPA Migration (NFS). It brings together representatives of banks, businesses, consumers, public authorities, software suppliers and other organisations. They agree on how the Dutch payments market will migrate.

The NFS was established by the National Forum on the Payment System (MOB) to ensure a well-organised transition to IBAN and SEPA, with the commitment of the parties involved. The NFS is chaired by De Nederlandsche Bank .
