Royal couple meet Dutch Payments Association during trade mission to southern Germany

A trade mission to the German state of Bavaria took place on 13 April. His Majesty King Willem-Alexander and Her Majesty Queen Máxima were briefed on new developments in Dutch payments.

Through public-private and interbank partnerships, Dutch banks work on security and new banking products. The trade mission was accompanied by Minister Ploumen and VNO-NCW chair De Boer. The royal couple showed an interest in the excellent cybersecurity results achieved by the banks. They were particularly impressed by the fall in fraud losses from more than €80 million in 2012 to almost €18 million in 2015, as well as by innovations in payments. The King said that he regularly paid with iDEAL .

First mobile contactless payment

During the showcase, the King made his first mobile contactless payment. Mobile payments in the Netherlands were made possible by intensive cooperation between banks, mobile network operators, mobile phone manufacturers and payment processors. The King expressed his admiration for this innovation and noted that good cooperation is essential to achieving results.

Marco Doeland, risk manager at the Dutch Payments Association, demonstrated logging in with iDIN to the royal visitors. iDIN was the banks’ new method of online identification and had likewise been created through close interbank cooperation.
