40% more debit card payments and 50% more iDEAL payments before Christmas

This year, the run-up to Christmas saw 40% more debit card payments and 50% more iDEAL payments than last year. It should be noted that this year’s shopping period included two additional days. Daily records were broken again: 17.7 million debit card payments were made on Friday 23 December. Last year’s record of 16.3 million payments was set on Wednesday 23 December. The record for the number of debit card payments per second was broken on Saturday 24 December. Between 2 pm and 2.30 pm, 536 debit card payments per second were recorded. The previous record was 528 payments per second, set on Thursday 24 December.

The daily iDEAL record was set on Friday 25 November, Black Friday, with more than 1.4 million iDEAL payments in a single day.
