€6 billion paid electronically in run-up to Sinterklaas

Between Black Friday on 24 November and Sinterklaas on 5 December, consumers in the Netherlands spent around €6 billion using debit cards, credit cards and iDEAL in nearly 170 million transactions. These estimates by the Dutch Payments Association are based on reports from transaction processor equensWorldline and credit card issuer International Card Services (ICS).

Between Black Friday and Sinterklaas, consumers spent 9 per cent more by debit card and credit card at points of sale (in Dutch) than in 2016.

The increase in online spending by iDEAL and credit card (in Dutch)(opens in new window) was much greater still: 45 per cent more than in the same period last year.
