On 3 September, the European WE BUILD partnership was officially launched, with more than 350 participants from 35 countries. In a ‘large scale pilot<\/em>‘, 13 possible applications of the so-called EUDI Wallet<\/em> are being developed and tested.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n

What is WE BUILD?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n\n\n

WE BUILD(opens in new window)<\/span> <\/path><\/svg><\/span><\/a> stands for ‘Wallet Ecosystem for Business and payments Use cases on Identification, Legal representation and Data sharing<\/em>‘. The consortium focuses on business applications of the EUDI Wallet<\/em>, such as identification, legal representation and data sharing in payments and other interactions. The EUDI Wallet<\/em>(EU Digital Identity Wallet<\/em>(opens in new window)<\/span> <\/path><\/svg><\/span><\/a>) is the digital EU proof of identity. Over 24 months, several pilots will be developed and implemented with it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n

The coordination lies with Dutch and Swedish government bodies, including the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate, the Chamber of Commerce and the Swedish Bolagsverket (the Swedish Chamber of Commerce).<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n

Betaalvereniging Nederland and Visa are also involved in WE BUILD and are supervising a working group focusing on approving consumer payments with EUDI Wall<\/em>et.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n

EUDI Wallet<\/em> and consumer payments<\/h2>\n\n\n\n\n\n

Currently, consumers use a debit card with PIN, a login device or a mobile banking app to approve digital payments. In future, they will also be able to use a personal EUDI Wallet<\/em> for this purpose – if desired. This provides an alternative, secure way to approve payments from a bank account or with a debit card.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n

The WE BUILD working group on consumer payments will run several pilots over the next two years to investigate how this application can work in practice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n

Status and next steps<\/h2>\n\n\n\n\n\n

Since 1 August, the groundwork has been laid for a flying start for the WE BUILD working groups. Pre-funding has started and a collaboration portal has been set up for all participants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n

In the coming months, the working group in which the Payments Association is participating will focus on:<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n

    \n\n
  • defining scenarios and roles per application
    (such as wire transfers and card payments),<\/li>\n\n\n\n\n\n
  • involving banks and entrepreneurs in the pilots and<\/li>\n\n\n\n\n\n
  • planning in-depth workshops.<\/li>\n\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n\n\n

    Until the end of 2025, the feasibility of the various pilot scenarios will be investigated. This will include evaluating the required resources, test set-ups and timelines. The scenarios can then be practically developed in early 2026.<\/p>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
