Chipknip would end on 31 December 2014. Many consumers still had money on their Chipknip. Currence, the owner of the Chipknip brand, and its licensees therefore decided to refund the balances on active Chipknip cards to customers automatically in 2015.<\/p>\n\n\n

In mid-August, an estimated \u20ac70\u201380 million remained on Chipknip cards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Until 1 January, consumers could refund their Chipknip balance themselves quickly and easily at a Chipknip loading point. This would no longer be possible in 2015, when the loading infrastructure would be shut down permanently. During 2014, cardholders were advised to visit a loading point: \u201cTake your card to a loading point, press 1 and reduce your balance to zero.\u201d The Chipknip balance would reach the cardholder\u2019s payment account within two working days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

End of Chipknip<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

In a March 2013 press release, brand owner Currence announced that Chipknip would disappear as a payment method on 1 January 2015. Currence decided to discontinue Chipknip on the basis of market developments and after consulting market participants. This brought the Dutch electronic payment method to an end after 17 years.
