This year, the Dutch Tax and Customs Administration is piloting new login methods, including iDIN. iDIN is a service from the banks that allows consumers to identify themselves online to various organisations easily and securely. It is proving popular: iDIN has already been used to log in to the Tax and Customs Administration almost 20,000 times for 2016 tax returns, and that number is rising every day.<\/p>\n\n\n

Secure and easy<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

People who manage their banking online regularly log in to their bank. For most, it is an easy and familiar routine. iDIN uses the same process; see iDIN.nl <\/path><\/svg><\/span><\/a>. There are no new login details to remember. Users log in as they normally do with their bank, in a secure environment just like online banking or iDEAL. When someone logs in with iDIN, their bank first shows which personal data they are about to send to the organisation where they want to identify themselves online. The user must confirm the data before they are sent. Users therefore decide for themselves whether to share their personal data and with which party, retaining full control over their privacy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Logging in to public-sector services<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Dutch government is working on secure and easy ways to log in to its websites, with the aim of enabling more public services to be handled online. At present, most public authorities allow users to log in only with DigiD. From 2018, users will also be able to choose other login methods, including iDIN, when accessing public authorities and healthcare organisations. In 2017, the government is piloting iDIN at the Tax and Customs Administration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dutch Consumers\u2019 Association also finds iDIN easy and reliable<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Dutch Consumers\u2019 Association endorses the ease and reliability of logging in with iDIN (in Dutch) <\/path><\/svg><\/span><\/a>. In addition to the Tax and Customs Administration \u2013 see mijn.belastingdienst.nl (in Dutch) <\/path><\/svg><\/span><\/a> \u2013 iDIN can now be used at around ten other organisations. Ultimately, iDIN aims to become a standard login method for government services, insurers and online shops. Many consumers still use relatively insecure and predictable passwords for these services, which can lead to identity fraud. iDIN makes the internet considerably more secure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
