Banks are taking this initiative for as long as special measures are needed to contain the spread of the novel coronavirus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"cumulative-limit\">Cumulative limit<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The cumulative limit for contactless debit card payments is being raised from \u20ac50 to \u20ac100. When making a contactless payment of up to \u20ac25, cardholders previously still had to insert their debit card into the terminal and enter their PIN regularly. This will now hardly ever be necessary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"contactless\">Contactless<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe are calling on customers at supermarkets and other shops to pay contactlessly as much as possible,\u201d says Ren\u00e9 Roorda, Managing Director of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbl.nl\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dutch Food Retail Association<span class=\"sr-only\">(opens in new window)<\/span> <span class=\"icon inline-block ml-1 w-[0.875em]\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><svg aria-hidden=\"true\" xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\" width=\"32\" height=\"32\" fill=\"#000000\" viewBox=\"0 0 256 256\"><path d=\"M228,104a12,12,0,0,1-24,0V69l-59.51,59.51a12,12,0,0,1-17-17L187,52H152a12,12,0,0,1,0-24h64a12,12,0,0,1,12,12Zm-44,24a12,12,0,0,0-12,12v64H52V84h64a12,12,0,0,0,0-24H48A20,20,0,0,0,28,80V208a20,20,0,0,0,20,20H176a20,20,0,0,0,20-20V140A12,12,0,0,0,184,128Z\"><\/path><\/svg><\/span><\/a>. \u201cWe are therefore pleased with this swift initiative by the banks. It is in the interests of both our customers and our employees.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"protected-against-misuse\">Protected against misuse<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cees van Tiggelen, a representative of several organisations for older people, also supports the increase: \u201cThe easier it is for older people to pay contactlessly at the point of sale in these circumstances, the better. Bank customers remain well protected against misuse of contactless debit cards, so this is no obstacle to paying contactlessly.\u201d<br>For the time being, cardholders will still need to enter their PIN for contactless debit card payments above \u20ac25.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"beware-of-scammers\">Beware of scammers<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Consumers and retailers do not need to do anything at all for this increase in the cumulative contactless payment limit. It will be introduced fully automatically for all existing debit cards and payment terminals. Banks will therefore not send unsolicited messages or call their customers about it.
