This transaction limit is being temporarily raised to \u20ac50. Consumers and businesses do not need to take any action; the change will be implemented fully automatically.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"helping-to-combat-the-coronavirus\">Helping to combat the coronavirus<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Customers paying contactlessly will temporarily need to touch payment terminals less often. Banks and payment terminal suppliers hope this will help combat the further spread of the novel coronavirus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"payment-terminals-updated-remotely-and-automatically\">Payment terminals updated remotely and automatically<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Approximately 380,000 Dutch payment terminals will be updated remotely and automatically for this change to the transaction limit. The new limit is expected to be active on more than three-quarters of all payment terminals by Wednesday 25 March. It is important to us that banks continue to reimburse any unauthorised use up to the higher limits.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"information-materials\">Information materials<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe are pleased with this swift action. We are already asking customers to pay by debit card as much as possible, preferably using a contactless debit card, mobile phone or wearable,\u201d says Eus Peters, Director of the Dutch Retail Council. \u201cThe fact that this is now possible without a PIN for larger purchases as well is a great help.\u201d Retailers and other businesses can download customer information materials from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pin.nl\/promotiemateriaal\/\">pin.nl (in Dutch) <span class=\"icon inline-block ml-1 w-[0.875em]\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><svg aria-hidden=\"true\" xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\" width=\"32\" height=\"32\" fill=\"#000000\" viewBox=\"0 0 256 256\"><path d=\"M228,104a12,12,0,0,1-24,0V69l-59.51,59.51a12,12,0,0,1-17-17L187,52H152a12,12,0,0,1,0-24h64a12,12,0,0,1,12,12Zm-44,24a12,12,0,0,0-12,12v64H52V84h64a12,12,0,0,0,0-24H48A20,20,0,0,0,28,80V208a20,20,0,0,0,20,20H176a20,20,0,0,0,20-20V140A12,12,0,0,0,184,128Z\"><\/path><\/svg><\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"cumulative-limit\">Cumulative limit<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another contactless payment limit, known as the cumulative limit, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.betaalvereniging.nl\/en\/news\/less-frequent-pin-entry-contactless-debit-card-payments\/\">was raised by banks last week<\/a> from \u20ac50 to \u20ac100. This cumulative limit applies to several consecutive contactless payments made without a PIN. Banks will continue to reimburse any unauthorised use of stolen or lost contactless debit cards without a PIN up to the higher limits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"beware-of-fraudulent-messages-and-calls-purporting-to-be-from-banks\">Beware of fraudulent messages and calls purporting to be from banks<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Consumers and retailers do not need to do anything at all for the increases in the contactless payment limits without a PIN. The changes will be implemented fully automatically for all existing debit cards issued by every bank. Banks will therefore not send unsolicited messages or call their customers about them.
