Similar lockdown measures were in force on those four days in both years. The number of debit card payments was also 10% higher than on the same weekdays in a normal week in November, before the lockdown, while turnover was 30% above normal. These estimates are based on measurements by transaction processor Worldline.<\/p>\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-post-featured-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"667\" src=\"https:\/\/www.betaalvereniging.nl\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2025\/09\/shutterstock_538402975kerst.jpg\" class=\"attachment-post-thumbnail size-post-thumbnail wp-post-image\" alt=\"Woman in hat and scarf looks at Christmas decorations on the busy market stall, with bags and gold-colored garland in her arm.\" style=\"object-fit:cover;\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.betaalvereniging.nl\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2025\/09\/shutterstock_538402975kerst.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/www.betaalvereniging.nl\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2025\/09\/shutterstock_538402975kerst-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.betaalvereniging.nl\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2025\/09\/shutterstock_538402975kerst-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yesterday, on Christmas Eve, 17.1 million debit card payments were processed, with an estimated value of \u20ac504 million\u201415% more than on Christmas Eve the previous year. At around noon, approximately 690 debit card payments per second were recorded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During the seven days immediately before the lockdown began, 99.1 million debit card payments were recorded, with a value of \u20ac2.66 billion. This was approximately 5% more than during the seven days before the 2020 Christmas lockdown, which began on Tuesday 15 December. Compared with a normal week in November, 10% more debit card payments were made during those seven days, for a total amount that was 15% higher. At food, drink and tobacco retailers, the number of debit card payments was 55% higher on 23 December than on a normal Thursday and 40% higher than normal on 24 December.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Compared with 2019, the number and value of daily debit card payments during the days before Christmas were 5% to 25% lower. In addition, the number of cash payments at the point of sale has fallen by approximately 30% since 2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ideal.nl\/actueel\/nieuws\/ideal-betalingen-kerstmis\/\">In the days following the lockdown, the number of daily iDEAL payments was up to 55% higher <span class=\"icon inline-block ml-1 w-[0.875em]\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><svg aria-hidden=\"true\" xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\" width=\"32\" height=\"32\" fill=\"#000000\" viewBox=\"0 0 256 256\"><path d=\"M228,104a12,12,0,0,1-24,0V69l-59.51,59.51a12,12,0,0,1-17-17L187,52H152a12,12,0,0,1,0-24h64a12,12,0,0,1,12,12Zm-44,24a12,12,0,0,0-12,12v64H52V84h64a12,12,0,0,0,0-24H48A20,20,0,0,0,28,80V208a20,20,0,0,0,20,20H176a20,20,0,0,0,20-20V140A12,12,0,0,0,184,128Z\"><\/path><\/svg><\/span><\/a>, with estimated daily turnover up to 80% higher. During the seven days up to and including 23 December, 28.7 million iDEAL payments were recorded, with an estimated value of \u20ac2.73 billion.
