{"id":2652,"date":"2025-10-10T16:57:23","date_gmt":"2025-10-10T14:57:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.betaalvereniging.nl\/en\/?post_type=btv_wiki&#038;p=2652"},"modified":"2026-02-26T10:59:54","modified_gmt":"2026-02-26T09:59:54","slug":"debit-card-payments","status":"publish","type":"btv_wiki","link":"https:\/\/www.betaalvereniging.nl\/en\/knowledge-base\/card-payments\/debit-card-payments\/","title":{"rendered":"Debit card payments"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>With a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.betaalvereniging.nl\/en-archief\/knowledge-base\/card-payments\/payment-cards\/\">debit card<\/a> you can:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>pay in shops, restaurants and petrol stations, at charging stations and to travel on public transport (via <a href=\"https:\/\/www.betaalvereniging.nl\/en-archief\/knowledge-base\/card-payments\/ovpay-in-public-transport\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/www.betaalvereniging.nl\/en-archief\/knowledge-base\/card-payments\/ovpay-in-public-transport\/\">OVpay<\/a>), for example;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>withdraw <a href=\"https:\/\/www.betaalvereniging.nl\/en\/knowledge-base\/cash-payments\/\" type=\"btv_wiki\" id=\"10\">cash<\/a> from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.betaalvereniging.nl\/en\/knowledge-base\/cash-payments\/atm-infrastructure\/\">ATMs<\/a>;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.betaalvereniging.nl\/en\/knowledge-base\/online-payments\/debit-and-credit-cards\/\" type=\"btv_wiki\" id=\"3044\">paying online<\/a>, with an updated Debit Mastercard or Visa Debit debit card.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Debit cards are debit cards (also called ATM or bank cards). There are also credit cards but Dutch people pay much less often with these.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many consumers still use a debit card of the V PAY or Maestro card brand. Banks are gradually replacing these with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.betaalvereniging.nl\/en\/knowledge-base\/card-payments\/new-debit-cards\/\" type=\"btv_wiki\" id=\"2469\">updated debit cards<\/a> of the Visa Debit or Debit Mastercard card brand. These can be used in more places outside Europe and you can also pay online with them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-contactless-payment\">Contactless payment<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>All modern debit cards allow <a href=\"https:\/\/www.betaalvereniging.nl\/en\/knowledge-base\/card-payments\/tap-to-pay\/\" type=\"btv_wiki\" id=\"2552\"><strong>contactless payments<\/strong><\/a>. This can also be done with a digital debit card in a digital &#8216;wallet&#8217; on a smartphone or smartwatch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-advantages-of-contactless-payments\">Advantages of contactless payments<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>easy, fast and safe<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>with most smartphones: always with facial recognition or fingerprint;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>with a physical card and up to and including \u20ac50: usually without a PIN;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>with a physical card and above \u20ac50: always with PIN.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-security-limit\">Security limit<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>For security, a limit applies to contactless payments without a PIN with a physical card. When consecutive PIN-free payments together reach a total of \u20ac100 or \u20ac150, you must still enter the PIN. So someone with a found or stolen debit card can never pay more than \u20ac150 without a PIN. The bank compensates the (limited) damage to the rightful cardholder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-digital-wallets\">Digital wallets<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A <strong>digital &#8216;wallet&#8217;<\/strong> (digital wallet) is an app with digital payment cards on a phone or smartwatch that allows you to make contactless payments at the checkout.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Digital wallets can contain not only payment cards but also other digital cards, such as access cards, transport tickets, payment receipts, proof of identity, etc&#8230;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-paying-with-a-digital-wallet\">Paying with a digital wallet<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>works almost the same as contactless payment with a physical card;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>you unlock the wallet on your phone or smartwatch;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>you hold your phone or smartwatch against the payment terminal;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>done!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-well-known-examples\">Well-known examples<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Apple Pay, Google Pay and Garmin Pay are widely used digital wallets for digital payment cards in the Netherlands.
