Cash money

Every Dutch citizen can withdraw cash from an ATM using a debit card linked to their payments account. In the Netherlands, this can be done at Geldmaat's yellow ATMs, where you can also deposit cash.

Significant decline in cash payments

Due to the growth in debit card payments, even for smaller amounts, the number of cash payments has declined significantly in recent years. However, the Dutch Payments Association believes it is important that cash remains available and reachable to as many people as possible, just like other payment services.

Cash Covenant

The Cash Covenant was drawn up in 2022. The agreements in this covenant are intended to ensure that cash continues to function properly as a means of payment at the counter, even now that electronic payments are becoming increasingly common. The Minister of Finance, Sigrid Kaag, presented the covenant to the House of Representatives on April 8, 2022.

Uniform operation of ATMs

All ATMs in the Netherlands operate in the same way. The standardization of bank ATMs was completed in 2020.
