Use of the online payment method iDEAL(opens in new window) rose sharply again in 2013. The number of transactions increased by more than 21% to a total value of €10.8 billion. People in the Netherlands chose to pay with iDEAL more than 142 million times.

A major reason for this growth is the continuing increase in online shopping. iDEAL is also increasingly used beyond traditional e-commerce, for example for charitable donations, subscriptions and invoices. This is shown in Currence’s annual report. The annual figures also show that Chipknip use fell significantly compared with 2012, by 18%. In addition, the Dutch direct debit was replaced by the European direct debit. The transition to the euro payments market is now almost complete.
