Coalition for secure email

Businesses, industry organisations and public authorities will work together to tackle misuse such as phishing and the interception of email.

With support from the Ministry of Economic Affairs, they have established the ‘Secure Email Coalition (in Dutch)(opens in new window) ’. The initiative was announced today at a symposium held by the Standardisation Forum (in Dutch)(opens in new window) .

Email is popular but also vulnerable

Email is a widely used means of communication. Millions of people in the Netherlands send and receive tens of millions of emails every day. “Unfortunately, insecure email leads to misuse and losses. The good news is that email can be made more secure. To achieve this, senders and recipients throughout the chain need to apply modern security measures and the associated standards. More and more organisations are already doing so,” says Marco Doeland, Head of Risk Management at the Dutch Payments Association.

The standards supported by the Secure Email Coalition prevent cybercriminals from simply sending phishing emails in someone else’s name and from their email address. They also help prevent the interception of commercially sensitive and privacy-sensitive information in emails. Because these standards are open, they are available to every organisation.

Participants

The initiative was established under the direction of the Ministry of Economic Affairs (in Dutch)(opens in new window) and the Standardisation Forum (in Dutch)(opens in new window) . The Internet Standards Platform(opens in new window) , known as Internet.nl(opens in new window) , a partnership between the Dutch internet community and public authorities, is also involved.

The following organisations participate in the coalition: PostNL, KPN, the Dutch Payments Association, DDMA, Thuiswinkel.org, VNO-NCW, MKB-Nederland, Stichting Zeker-Online, Dutch Datacenter Association, Stichting DINL, XS4ALL, the Ministry of the Interior and Kingdom Relations (Central Government CIO), Fraud Help Desk, Nederland ICT and the Dutch Tax and Customs Administration.
